Bakery website design: Crumb & Co.

Crumb & Co. is a fictional artisan bakery and café we invented to show how we'd approach bakery website design for an independent shop in Southampton. It's a working concept site — today's bakes with prices, a simple order-ahead form and opening hours you can find in a second. The bakery isn't real, but the thinking is exactly what we'd bring to yours.

A busy bakery that sells out by lunchtime.

Our imaginary client is a small independent bakery and café near Southampton city centre. The bakers start at 4am, the sourdough is usually gone by noon, and the counter is three deep on a Saturday morning. Nobody on the team has time to answer the phone, let alone update a website.

Most people looking up a bakery online want one of three things: what's on today and how much it is, whether it's open right now, and how to make sure they get a loaf before it sells out. The old site — a few photos and a contact page — answered none of them, so customers rang up or turned up and were disappointed.

The goal: a site that makes you hungry within a second, answers the practical questions straight away, and lets regulars order ahead without the bakery picking up the phone.

A bakery website design that does the counter's job online.

Every section maps to something customers ask at the till. Here's what's on the page and why.

01

A menu with real prices

Breads, pastries and café items listed with prices and a short line on what makes each one special. Showing prices online saves the “how much is it?” question and sets expectations before people walk in, which matters for a premium product like slow-fermented sourdough.

02

Order ahead for collection

A short form: name, collection day, time slot and a few tick boxes for the most popular items, with a free-text field for anything else. It's a simple enquiry form, not a full online shop, so there's no payment to set up and orders can arrive by email. Payment on collection keeps it easy for everyone.

03

Opening hours you can't miss

Today's hours sit in the hero, and the full week is in a clear table near the address. For a café, “are they open?” is the most common search there is — so we answer it without anyone needing to scroll.

04

Food photography first

Big, warm photos of the bread and the counter do most of the selling. The hero image sits in an arched frame that echoes a shop window, and the warm cream, crust-brown and butter-yellow palette feels like the bakery itself.

05

Room for cakes and wholesale

Two smaller cards cover celebration cakes and wholesale supply to local cafés. They're higher-value enquiries that a bakery wants to grow, and on a real site each would become its own page so it can be found in search.

06

Fast on a phone signal

Most bakery visitors are on their phone, often on the way there. The page uses fonts already on the device, compressed images and almost no JavaScript, so it loads quickly even on a weak signal.

Who a site like this suits.

This approach suits any food business where people want to know what's on, what it costs and when you're open — and where pre-orders would make mornings easier.

  • Independent bakeries and patisseries that sell out and want to take orders ahead.
  • Cafés and coffee shops that want their menu, prices and hours easy to find.
  • Delis and farm shops with a changing range and seasonal specials.
  • Cake makers who take most of their work by enquiry and need a clear way to brief them.
  • Food businesses with a wholesale side that want trade enquiries from local cafés and restaurants.

What it would take to build yours.

A site like Crumb & Co. is a bespoke business website: designed from scratch around your bakes and your customers, and built by hand with hosting included. Business websites start from £1,500, with a fixed written quote before any work starts and nothing to pay upfront. If you'd like customers to pay online when they order, that becomes an e-commerce website, from £3,000. See our pricing for add-ons such as content management, so you can update the menu and prices yourself.

We're based in Southampton and work with food businesses across the city. Meetings are by video call, booked around your baking and opening hours. Find out more about our web design in Southampton, or view the live concept on your phone to see how it feels.
