Concept design

Accountant website design: Ledger Lane Accountants.

Ledger Lane is a fictional accountancy practice we invented to show how we'd approach accountant website design for a small firm in Southampton and Eastleigh. It's a working concept site — clear monthly packages, deadlines up front and a quote form that asks just enough. The business isn't real, but the thinking behind it is exactly what we'd bring to yours.

A practice that wants fewer "how much?" emails.

Our imaginary client is a small, qualified team working between Southampton and Eastleigh. Their clients are sole traders, landlords and directors of small limited companies — people who are good at their own work and would rather not think about HMRC.

The practice had three problems we hear often from accountants. Prospective clients couldn't tell what anything cost, so most first enquiries were about price. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax was generating a steady stream of anxious questions. And the old site looked like every other accountant's site, so there was no reason to pick them over the firm down the road.

The goal: a site that feels friendly and local, answers the price question before it's asked, and turns visitors into quote requests the practice can act on straight away.

An accountant website design built around trust and clarity.

Every section answers a question a nervous new client actually has. Here's what's on the page and why it's there.

01

Transparent monthly packages

Three packages — sole trader, landlord and limited company — each with a monthly price, exactly what's included and add-ons like VAT returns and payroll priced alongside. Publishing prices filters out poor-fit enquiries and builds trust with everyone else.

02

A Making Tax Digital explainer

A short, plain-English section with a simple timeline of when MTD for Income Tax applies at each income level. It answers the most common worry in two minutes and shows the practice knows its stuff, without a wall of jargon.

03

Deadlines in the hero

A small "coming up" card lists the key Self Assessment dates. It's useful on its own, gives people a reason to come back, and quietly says "we'll keep you on track" before anyone reads a word of sales copy.

04

A quote form that asks just enough

Name, email, business type and rough turnover — the four things an accountant needs to give a fixed price. Tappable options instead of typing make it quick on a phone, and the promise of a reply within one working day sets expectations.

05

"Who we help" up front

Visitors pick the description that sounds like them before they see prices, so the rest of the page reads as if it was written for them. On a real site each of these would become its own page, which also helps with local search.

06

A calm, grown-up look

Deep green and warm paper tones with a classic serif feel established and reassuring, while generous spacing and rounded shapes keep it approachable. It loads quickly with no web fonts at all, using fonts already on the visitor's device.

Who a site like this suits.

This approach works for any professional service where people want to know the price and feel they're in safe hands before they get in touch.

  • Accountants and bookkeepers who offer fixed monthly fees and want to show them.
  • Tax advisers who need to explain changes like Making Tax Digital simply.
  • Payroll bureaus selling clear, per-employee packages.
  • Small practices competing with bigger firms on personal service rather than size.
  • Firms switching from a template site that looks like everyone else's.
